3 Hockey Balance Board Exercises to Blast the Core

Auto Draft

Using a hockey balance board to work out with is one of the best things you can do to build your core and stay in shape. You are probably already aware that the game of hockey requires an incredible amount of strength, stamina, and balance. The one thing about working out on a balance board is that all three of these necessary components will become stronger and better if you continue to exercise on your balance board on a regular basis. As we know, doing the same thing over and over again can repetitive and boring, but we have a few workouts you can try for yourself that will blast your core, and keep your mind engaged.

Balance Board Squats

One of the best exercises that you can do while you are on your balance board is squat while balanced. At first, it may seem a bit difficult, but after a few tries, you will be able to get it. The core is a fast learner and it knows how to keep you on your feet better than you might think. You can start out by placing your balance board in the regular position that you would normally begin your balancing session on. When you are on your feet, balanced and stable squat down to where your spine is straight, and your legs are at a 90-degree angle to your body. Hold yourself there for 10 seconds, then stand back up. When you pause at the bottom you are continuing to engage your core but from a different angle. Continue to squat for eight to ten reps.

Balance Board Squats with Arms Extended

Keeping your arms extended may be a bit more difficult than you imagine at first. While you balance yourself, your brain will tell your body what parts of the body need to move to where in order to remain in balance. If you consciously deny a movement, you will be forced to maneuver another way to stay balanced. These conversations that occur between your body and your brain happen at an incredible rate of speed. Position yourself the same way that you did in the above exercise, but keep your arms extended out straight in front of you as you squat. You may feel the challenge at first Keep going and do eight to ten reps.

Balance Board Pushups

Another way to blast your core on a balance board that you may not have heard about is to do pushups while balancing your body. The way to do this is to put the board on the floor, the same way as you would stand on it, but put your hands on it instead. Throw your feet behind you in the same manner as you would do regular pushups, and hold yourself upright using the board. Lower your body down until your chest hits the hockey balance board, then push yourself back up. You can feel your core engage when you do your reps. This exercise strengthens your whole body but seriously focuses on your upper body strength.

Balancing On the Board

Although squats and pushups on a balance board do blast the core muscles, just balancing on a balance board for 15 minutes a day is an incredibly effective way to work the core. Whether you do different moves or practice stickhandling moves while balancing it is all good. As long as you continue to work out and don’t get lazy about it you will continue to reap all of the great benefits that come with a healthy and strong core.
